California Union Leader Accused of Harassment

The Billionaires’ Tax Proposal Takes a Hit, but Will It Matter?

A recent investigative report has brought new scrutiny to Dave Regan, president of SEIU United Healthcare Workers West, who is behind the proposal to tax billionaires in California. Accusations of harassment and intimidation against several women who work for an affiliated union have cast a shadow over the measure’s chances of passing.

The report commissioned by SEIU California details allegations of Regan’s behavior, including physically assaulting an SEIU leader more than 15 years ago and engaging in harassing behavior against other women. While Regan has denied some claims, he acknowledged using curse words with union leaders. The accusations are particularly damaging because they come from within his own ranks.

The treatment of women in labor leadership positions is a problem that has plagued the labor movement for decades. Allegations of sexism and misogyny have surfaced in various sectors, raising questions about whether some men in power will intimidate or harass others to get what they want. Historically, labor unions have been at the forefront of fighting for workers’ rights, including combating harassment and discrimination in the workplace.

The SEIU California’s response – filing charges against Regan with the SEIU International Union – is a step in the right direction. However, more needs to be done to address this issue. The organization must take a hard look at Regan’s behavior and consider whether he is fit to lead their union.

Opponents of the billionaire’s tax proposal are trying to discredit the measure by focusing on the allegations against Regan. This tactic is not new in California politics, where wealthy interests have consistently sought to undermine progressive policies. The SEIU United Healthcare Workers West needs to take a stand and distance itself from these tactics.

As California voters prepare to decide on Proposition 40, they should be asking themselves whether this is a union that truly represents their values. While the billionaire’s tax proposal may be an important step towards addressing income inequality in the state, it’s clear that the labor movement still has much work to do in terms of living up to its ideals.

The question now is whether the SEIU United Healthcare Workers West will take meaningful action to address Regan’s behavior and restore the trust of their members. If they fail to do so, it could have serious consequences for the future of the labor movement as a whole.

The SEIU's handling of Dave Regan's alleged misconduct raises questions about accountability within labor unions. While charging him with internal union conduct is a necessary step, it may not be enough to quell concerns about his leadership and the broader culture of sexism in the labor movement. The real test will come when the SEIU International Union takes action on these allegations – failing to do so would undermine its own credibility as a champion of workers' rights.

While the allegations against Dave Regan are certainly disturbing, let's not lose sight of the bigger picture: the SEIU's billionaire tax proposal is being undermined by a coordinated effort to discredit its leader, rather than engaging with the substance of the measure itself. The real test will be whether the union can separate fact from fiction and push forward with a solution that truly addresses income inequality – or if it becomes collateral damage in the politics of California's elite.

The SEIU's response to Regan's alleged behavior is welcome, but it's not enough. Filing charges against him within the union doesn't hold him accountable to external standards of accountability, nor does it address the systemic issues that allow such behavior to persist. To truly reform the culture of labor leadership, SEIU must adopt a zero-tolerance policy for harassment and provide clear consequences for perpetrators, regardless of their position or influence. Anything less risks perpetuating a cycle of intimidation and silencing women within the union.
