The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has sounded a warning about the growing threat to global air quality and human health from wildfires and heatwaves. The toxic particles released by these extreme weather events pose a significant risk to our well-being.
Scientists have long understood the link between climate change and extreme weather events like wildfires and heatwaves. However, what’s disturbing is the extent to which these pollutants can travel and affect people far from their source. Conventional risk models tend to underestimate the impact of wildfire smoke on human mortality, potentially by up to 93 percent.
Since the 1990s, extreme fire-smoke events have tripled globally, contributing to nearly 100,000 additional deaths per year between 2010 and 2018. This figure is likely an underestimate, as a study cited in the WMO Bulletin suggests that even more people are being affected by wildfire smoke than previously thought.
Ground-level ozone, another major air pollutant, poses significant health risks during heatwaves. As temperatures rise and atmospheric conditions stagnate, ozone pollution accumulates, leading to tens of thousands of additional premature deaths each year.
The increasing concern over aerosol particles is also alarming. These particles can travel long distances, altering the way the atmosphere reflects sunlight and changing the chemical properties of land and water. For example, the deposition of black carbon on snow and ice accelerates melting and has significant implications for global weather patterns.
Microplastics are another growing concern, with an estimated 51 million tonnes of plastic waste ending up on land each year and another 22 million tonnes dumping into the ocean. This is a ticking time bomb for human health and ecosystems around the world.
The WMO’s warning should serve as a wake-up call to policymakers and citizens alike. We can no longer afford to treat air quality and climate change as separate issues. The interconnectedness of these problems demands a more coordinated approach – one that prioritizes the monitoring and regulation of pollutants like particulate matter, ozone, and microplastics.
As we continue to grapple with the consequences of human activity on our planet, it’s time to recognize the hidden toll of wildfire smoke and other air pollutants. The statistics are stark, but they represent real people, communities, and ecosystems affected by these silent killers.
