Bison Population Sees Decline in N.W.T. Road Collisions

The Unlikely Heroes of the N. W. T. 's Wildfire Zones The number of collisions between vehicles and bison in the Northwest Territories (N. W. T. ) has been declining.

From 2021 to 2025, there were 60 reported incidents resulting in at least 76 deaths. However, as of this year's mid point, that number has dropped dramatically – just one collision so far.

Terry Armstrong, a bison ecologist with the N. W. T. 's Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC), attributes this shift to wildfires.
